We have an old house. It was built in 1940, but we think it was earlier than that. When we first bought the house, everyone said “It’s a good starter home for you.” Well, we are still here. Anyone who owns an old home can tell you that the projects never end. And when they do you start all over again. We had replaced our old oil burning furnace and gas hot water tank a few years back, but recently they both decided to die at the same time. When we had that wicked below zero cold snap around Christmas time, our burner was not working. We were using space heaters and the fire place. We had drafts all the time and this kept the furnace running more consistently.
We found out about Dr. Energy through the Smart E- Loan Program with the Connecticut Green Bank. They were listed as one of the contractors. With the type of loan we got (bundle) we were able to get a few things done: insulation, windows, and furnace/hot water heater. I felt a lot of confidence in Dr. Energy Saver of CT knowing that they were being recommended by the Green Bank.
Since our house was so old, there was no insulation in the walls. Dr. Energy Saver of CT installed Dense Pack TruSoft Cellulose and we noticed immediately the drafts were gone. In addition to the insulation, we also upgraded our windows.
The house has been upgraded to save money on our energy costs. So far we have only had one oil delivery for the year. We expect one more. But before we had all the work done, we probably spent close to an extra $1,000 on oil. We are anxious to see how this will translate in the spring and summer when they complete installing the new windows in the house. I can tell already, from the basement windows, that we will experience a big difference not to mention how much more modern the house looks. The improvements we have made over the years, we have tried to keep some of the old house charm combined with modern upgrades. The windows should surely help escalate the house’s value.
We worked with Keith Saunders as our salesman. Keith was low key, knowledgeable, and informative. At first we were not planning to be as expansive in our project, but Keith broke everything down in a graphic and detailed manner so we knew what was both feasible and necessary. He was in constant contact with me during the financing phase and helped coordinate with both the CT Green Bank and our lender. Johnny and his crew handled the insulation and the basement windows. They were clean, efficient, and professional. They explained everything beforehand, left no messes, and tried to stay as unobtrusive to our family routine as possible. They had to detach the outside siding in order to blow in the insulation. When they had finished, I could not tell where they had removed the siding.
One thing that surprised me about working with Dr. Energy Saver of CT was how fast the work got done. The workers were clean ( as far as not leaving any messes) and how much of a change we felt in the house. We felt like, “Why didn’t we do this a long time ago!” We would definitely refer Dr. Energy to my neighbors or anyone interested in energy improvements in the house. They are knowledgeable, polite, and hard working. They really seem interested in helping you have a better living environment.
