Making the Attic a Usable Space
Our team began applying the spray foam on the attic rafters. Spray foam is an excellent choice of insulation when turning the attic space into a usable area such as offices for this homeowner.
Making the Attic Part of the Building Envelope
Here, our team member, Jerry, is covering the bays with a coat of spray foam insulation. By putting a thermal air barrier on the ceiling and exterior walls, the attic becomes a conditioned space and part of the building envelope.
Avoiding a Convective Loop
Cold ceilings and walls create a convective loop. Warm air rises, and when it reaches the cold ceiling and exterior walls, it falls to the floor, runs across the floor, and rises back up through the relatively warmer interior. When it reaches the cold ceiling again the loop continues causing a perceived draft. When Jerry is finished, this space will be comfortable and draft-free.
Whole House Comfort
Another reason this home will be less drafty is that less air leaking out of the top of the house will mean less outside, cold, unconditioned air will be leaking in at the bottom of the house to replace the air that left. This insulation upgrade in the attic will even affect comfort on first floor!
